Although hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, it’s a royal pain to make.

Most industrial hydrogen producers currently make the gas by heating methane and water to 815 degrees Celsius and causing a reaction. Unfortunately, this process generates 9.3 kilograms of carbon dioxide for every kilo of hydrogen, so it’s not environmentally friendly or cheap.

Other companies like Signa Chemistry have come out with chemical catalysts that can strip hydrogen from water.

That’s correct, a group of Welshmen have created a hydrogen fuel cell minibus that will go on sale for only $190,000. Researchers at the University of Glamorgan in Wales developed the fuel cell minibus known as the Hydrogen Bus and put it on display at the Tenth Grove Fuel Cell Symposium in October 2007.

Fortunately, when we set out to do a green products issue, we found a great industrial design road map: the Okala Course Guide—created by Philip White, Louise St. Pierre and Steve Belletire—done in conjunction with the Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA). White spent a number of years at Philips Design in the Netherlands and now teaches industrial design at Arizona State University. Hopefully this will give you some idea of how Jetrike rides. In the video I am riding Jetrike around the research station, reaching speeds of 37kmh and cornering at 22kmh (in two places) on a 2km loose gravel circuit. The road is a single lane and all the corners are at right angles, so I really had to lean hard not to end up in the cane fields!

A new paper published in Journal of the American Ceramic Society proposes a new method of producing hydrogen for portable fuel cells. This new method negates the need for the complicated and expensive equipment currently used. With their ability to work steadily for 10-20 times the length of equivalently sized Lithium-ion batteries, portable fuel cells are ideal energy suppliers for devices such as computers, cell phones and hybrid vehicles.
